そして私たちは本能的に近くのイギリス海軍病院のほうへ向かった。トリイと称する門をくぐって病院への階段をのぼると、私たちは病院の広い構内にはいった。びっくりしたことに、病棟とバンガローふうの平家の建物はいずれもペシャンコになっていたが、しかし多くの人々はすでに、私たちがよくテニスをした山手通りの上手の二面のテニスコートに避難してきており、しかも、その他の人々は次の段々庭へおりて、湾を見晴らす崖のほうへと進み、さらにそこから崖っぷちにある第三の段々庭のほうへ向かうところであった。

and we turned instinctively to the British Naval Hospital beside us; and climbing its steps through the Torii gateway, we entered its spacious grounds. To our amazement, every ward and bungalow had been laid flat,but scores of people had already taken refuge on the double tennis-court above the Bluff road where we had so often played, and others were making their way down to the next terrace towards the cliff overlooking the bay, and thence to a third terrace at the very edge.
