私たちは、いま八十九番地の次の角にあるキリスト教会のところにいたが、教会はあたかも爆破されたかのように見えた。ひとつのアーチだけが完全な姿で立っていたが、その他の建物はすべて煉瓦と鋼鉄の巨大なかたまりとなって、胸の高さまで、バリケードのように道路一面に広がっていた。
よじのぼって行く以外、打つ手はなかった。しかも私たちがそうしていたときに、もうひとつの地震が起こって、ちょうど早足で歩くサーカスの馬たちが肩をすりよせるように、建材を互いにすり合わせて粉々にした。けれども、運よく、私たちは平衡を保ち、けがをせずにすんだ。「何とも奇妙だ」と私は思った。「この教会の残骸をよじのぼったのは、これで二度目だ」と。

We were now at Christ Church on the next corner to 89, which looked as if it had been blasted, only one arch rising complete, the rest in massive chunks of brick and steel spread over the road like a barricade, breast high. There was nothing for it but to clamber across, and as we did so another quake ground the blocks against each other like trotting circus horses rubbing shoulders; but luckily, we kept our balance and were unhurt. 'How strange', I thought, 'this is the second time I have climbed over the ruins of this church!'

Throughout the night, lifeboats plied back and forth be tween the ships and shore, and it was nearly daybreak before the last boat-load of survivors from the reclaimed ground came by, with the Reverend Eustace Strong in the stern, head ban daged and worn out. He had done splendid work combining the shore for isolated groups and shepherding them to the boats; and in the following days he proved tireless.
